Dedicated to Nativity of Holy Mary, the complex of the Vicoforte Sanctuary "Regina Montis Regalis”Is one of the main masterpieces of Piedmontese Baroque, an architectural style that established itself in Piedmont from the end of the 500th to the beginning of the 700th century with the rise of the Savoy kingdom. The style is characterized by sober lines on the outside of buildings e very rich and spectacular architectural compositions inside.

The construction of the pylon that originated the Sanctuary is placed around the 1500. A tradition has it that it was thehomage of a kilnsman, at the suggestion of his daughter, to obtain the grace of the sun from the Madonna: bad weather prevented a good firing of the bricks necessary for the construction of the castle Vico, ancient name of Mondovì. The name derives from “Mont ëd Vi", That is" the mount of Vico "(" Vi "abbreviated): the inhabitants of Vico,

In 1592 the accidental shot of a hunter, Giulio Sargiano, inadvertently hit the effigy now hidden by the brambles and the bush: this fact, albeit accidental, was considered harmful by the population already decimated by plague e misery to the point that the deputies were convinced to ask for help from heaven.

In 1594 around the pylon was built, by the deacon of the nearby village of Fiamenga, Cesare Trombetta, a first chapel in thanksgiving to the Madonna who in a short time gathered around her a large number of faithful from all over Piedmont.

There are two aspects that are most striking about  Vicoforte SanctuaryThe first is to find that its dome  is the largest in the world among those of elliptical shape and it's the farm, in size, after St. Peter in the Vatican, the Pantheon in Rome, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence and the dome of Gol Gumbaz in India.
